What is i-PRF ?

i-PRF stands for Injected- Platelet Rich Fibrin.  i-PRF is considered second generation PRP.  PRP stands for Plate Rich Plasma.  The principle of PRP therapy involves concentrating growth factors in a component of your own blood called platelets.  Blood is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma.  Plasma is the non-cellular component of blood consisting mainly of water, electrolytes and proteins such as albumin, hormones, prothrombin and fibrinogen.

Both i-PRF and PRP start with taking of your blood into a collection tube and centrifuging this blood into separate blood components.  Selected specific components of this separation is then injected into sites for regenerative therapy.    Three major differences in these therapies include:

  1. Anti-coagulants in the collection tubes of PRP and no chemicals for the i-PRF tubes.
  2. In i-PRF, clotting is initiated immediately as blood touches the glass surface of the collecting tube converting the prothrombin to thrombin and the thrombin then converts the fibrinogen to fibrin monomers. Collective fibrin monomers  then forms a fibrin clot and this does not occur in PRP, as it contains anti-coagulants such as citrate.
  3. During the clotting process in i-PRF tubes, the fibrin mesh formed traps platelets within.  This increases the concentration of  platelets in the final injecting volume.
i-PRF Injections for Facial and Neck Wrinkle Reduction

This involves an initial consultation with a registered nurse practitioner/doctor taking a brief medical history to ascertain your suitability to the therapy.  The consultation will also explain the benefits and risks of this therapy.

These therapy injections involve two separate sessions with an interval period of about 4 weeks and will be carried out by the registered nurse practitioner/doctor.

In obtaining your own i-PRF, a 10ml sample of blood is taken from you in a closed circuit system ensuring sterility.  The vacuum tube containing your blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the different components.  The heaviest component, red blood cells settles to the bottom of the tube followed by white blood cells, then the fibrin mesh with platelets and finally the top layer consists of plasma.  The layer of fibrin and platelets is then extracted into a syringe.  This syringe containing your platelet rich fibrin (PRF) with various growth factors within, is then injected into your specific sterile site depending on your chosen therapy.

Prior to the i-PRF Injections, your face and neck will receive steam therapy along with topical ozone and herbs.   The steam increases blood flow, the ozone has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects while the vapored herbs have similar benefits.

After the i-PRF therapy, exercises for facial and neck muscles, along with nutritional advice on foods for encouraging stem cell regeneration will be provided. This is to help with better outcome results.

Included with the therapy is a final follow up appointment which is then arranged to establish progress and satisfaction of the therapy.
